Tragically, Salazar's life was cut short in 1604, when his ship, the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, sank off the coast of Florida during a hurricane. Salazar was on board, and despite efforts to save him, he went down with his ship. The wreck of the Atocha was discovered in 1985, and it has since become one of the most significant underwater archaeological sites in the world.
