Pixar’s roots trace back to the Computer Graphics Lab at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). In 1979, George Lucas, founder of Lucasfilm, recruited Dr. Ed Catmull to head a new division dedicated to applying computer technology to filmmaking. The team developed groundbreaking technologies, including the "Genesis Effect" sequence in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and the first completely CGI character, the stained-glass knight in Young Sherlock Holmes (1985).
