The "Lesbian Public" is no longer a monolith of cisgender white women. Events like Dyke March have evolved to explicitly center Black and trans voices, acknowledging that the safety of the most marginalized ensures the safety of the whole.
However, these spaces were frequently subject to police raids and social stigma, forcing the public aspect of lesbian life to remain "discreet." The "public" was something to be navigated carefully, using sartorial codes like short hair, carabiners, or specific jewelry to identify one another without alerting the outside world.
