When a PC game runs on Steam, it communicates with the steam_api.dll or steam_api64.dll files. These files are the bridge that tells the Steam client what game is running, who owns it, and—crucially—which Downloadable Content (DLC) the user has purchased.
CreamAPI works by intercepting these communications. When a user places the CreamAPI DLL file into a game’s directory (renaming the original Steam DLL and swapping it out), the tool acts as a "man-in-the-middle."
