Original member Nick Massi left the group in 1965, citing exhaustion and disputes over musical direction. Later, the band faced legal battles and financial ruin. Their label, Vee-Jay Records, failed to pay royalties, and the band members found themselves broke despite selling millions of records.

Why? Because their music wasn't a fad. It was rooted in the same R&B and doo-wop traditions that the British bands were paying homage to. While The Beatles were singing "Till There Was You," The Four Seasons were offering gritty, street-corner romance.
