Mutha Magazine Allison Author Mutha -
During its most active years (2015–2020), Mutha built a cult following. Essays from the magazine were regularly nominated for awards like the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net. Pieces went viral not for being heartwarming, but for being painfully true—such as confessions of hiding in the closet to eat chocolate alone or the strange grief of weaning a child from breastfeeding.
Allison McCarthy, a Brooklyn-based writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times , The Cut , and VICE , created Mutha out of a specific frustration. She found that mainstream conversations about motherhood were either saccharine and reductive or clinical and judgment-free to the point of sterility. McCarthy wanted a place where the mess—emotional, physical, and psychological—was not just tolerated but celebrated. mutha magazine allison author mutha
