Crucially, Paula is rarely a passive victim. While she is frequently captured, the narrative focus remains on her intellect and resilience. She usually saves herself, or uses her investigative wits to turn the tables. It is a delicate balance that the writers maintain well: the "peril" is the spectacle, but Paula’s character is the substance.

Created by James Watson, Paula Peril (and her alter-ego Paula Picoletti) is a throwback to a bygone era. She is an investigative reporter for The Morning Herald in the fictional city of Orchard Harbor. The premise borrows heavily from the likes of Superman’s Lois Lane or the protagonists of 1940s serials, but with one key difference: Paula has no superpowers, only an insatiable drive for the truth and an uncanny ability to survive situations that would kill a normal person.
