Meanwhile, Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) has reclaimed the Lonely Mountain and its vast treasure, but he is stricken with “dragon sickness” — a greedy madness that makes him hoard the gold and betray his word to the people of Lake-town. As the Elven king Thranduil (Lee Pace) and the Men of Lake-town march toward the mountain to claim their share of the treasure, Thorin calls for reinforcements from his cousin Dáin Ironfoot (Billy Connolly).
Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), ever the reluctant hero, tries to stop the madness, offering the Arkenstone to Thranduil and Bard to negotiate peace. Thorin banishes him, but later, in a moment of clarity, Thorin breaks free of the dragon sickness. He leads a desperate charge to Ravenhill to kill Azog, mortally wounding the Orc chieftain but receiving a fatal wound himself. Thorin dies in Bilbo’s arms, reconciled at last.
