The episode splits the staff into two main storylines. Janine takes on the daunting task of reviving the school’s defunct step team. Having never stepped before, she is forced to ask the intimidating (and highly skilled) Ava for help. Meanwhile, Melissa struggles with a new teacher’s aide, Ashley (played by Keyla Monterroso Mejia), who has zero interest in actually assisting and spends her time on her phone or disrupting the class.

The B-plot is equally strong. Ashley is a nightmare aide, and Melissa’s slow descent into madness trying to manage her provides some of the most relatable moments for anyone who has ever worked in an understaffed environment. Barbara’s passive-aggressive enjoyment of Melissa’s struggle adds a delightful layer to the scene.
