In the show’s universe, people who die are uploaded to a digital heaven (Horizen). But just like your iPhone or Windows PC, this digital afterlife requires updates. The tension in Episode 9 revolves around the fear of what happens when the code changes. Will memories be deleted? Will personalities be altered?
