The album’s signature is immediately clear: Tony Iommi’s guitar. After losing the tips of his middle and ring fingers in a factory accident, Iommi fashioned homemade thimbles out of melted plastic bottle caps. To ease the pain of playing, he detuned his guitar, lowering the pitch and creating a sludgy, massive, crushing tone. Black Sabbath was formed in Birmingham, England in 1968 by guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, drummer Bill Ward, and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne. The band's early years were marked by a series of lineup changes and a struggle to find their sound. However, with the classic lineup of Iommi, Butler, Ward, and Osbourne solidified, the band began to develop their unique blend of blues, psychedelia, and hard rock.
