In Classical and Vedic Sanskrit, dadatu translates directly to "let them give" or "may they bestow". It is widely embedded across traditional mantras, prayers, and protective rituals ( sanskara ):
The word itself is believed to have roots in a fusion of childhood babble and paternal instinct— Dada (a child’s first attempt at “Dad”) and -tu , a suffix of endearment in several South Asian languages. Over time, it evolved into a verb, a noun, and a feeling. To dadatu is to give not what is needed, but what is remembered.
