Uwp | Runtime

The most damaging aspect of the UWP runtime was Microsoft’s own wavering commitment. They eventually allowed Win32 apps in the Store, diluting the UWP advantage. Then, they decoupled the UI layer (WinUI) from the OS, allowing WinUI 3 to run inside standard Win32 apps.

This was the runtime’s crowning achievement. UWP introduced a package model where apps were installed and uninstalled cleanly. No more registry keys left rotting in the system, no more "InstallShield Wizards" crashing halfway through. You clicked "Uninstall," and the app was gone. It was the iOS/App Store experience brought to Windows, and for the average user, it was a massive quality-of-life improvement. uwp runtime
