In response to growing demands, the PCI standard evolved to support faster data transfer rates. The introduction of PCI-X (PCI eXtended) in 1998 increased the clock speed to 66 MHz and doubled the bandwidth to 266 MB/s. Later, PCI-X 2.0 and 2.1 further increased the bandwidth to 533 MB/s and 1 GB/s, respectively. However, these improvements were still limited by the traditional PCI bus architecture.
