Between the late 1920s and mid-1930s, the so-called pre-Code era allowed filmmakers to explore subjects that would later be banned for three decades:

The reel cut. The next segment was time-stamped two hours later. They were on set. A train was supposed to stop just inches from Lilia. It was the climax of the film.

Some classic movies tested the limits of the Hays Code, often resulting in controversy or censorship:
