(also known as wall-clock time or real time ) is the actual amount of time that passes from the start of a computer program to its completion.

When transposed onto the human condition, wall time represents the external enforcement of schedule over the internal experience of duration. Pre-industrial humanity lived primarily by "task orientation"—work was defined by what needed to be done (harvesting, hunting, building), and it was finished when the task was complete. Time was elastic. With the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the proliferation of the mechanical clock, society shifted to "timed labor." The clock on the factory wall became the ultimate authority. It did not matter if a worker felt energetic or tired, or if the work was meaningful; what mattered was the duration of the presence.
