Bedworth sits largely on heavy clay soil. Soakaways are notoriously inefficient in clay because the water cannot permeate the ground quickly enough. Over decades, many soakaways in the area have essentially become "sealed tanks." They fill with silt and sediment and, because the clay won't absorb the water, they remain permanently blocked. This turns road gullies into stagnant pools that overflow during even moderate rainfall.
