F1 is the first position taught in welding schools. It allows students to focus on their hand-eye coordination, arc length, and travel speed without the complexities of body positioning required for vertical or overhead welds.

Imagine placing one steel plate flat on a table and placing another steel plate vertically on top of it, forming an upside-down "T" shape.
