If you don't clear this first, more debris will wash down and re-clog the pipe as soon as you start flushing it. Bay Plumbing & Drainage +1 Step 2: Inspect the Top of the Downpipe Check the very top of the downpipe where it connects to the gutter. Often, a large object like a ball or a clump of debris is stuck right at the entrance. You may be able to reach in and pull this out manually (wear gloves!). Jiggle the hose up and down to help dislodge the blockage. If water backs up out of the top, the clog is deeper and requires more force.
