Maya Bijou Step |top| -

The "Maya Bijou Step" is not a recognized term in mainstream Mayanist archaeology. This report treats it as a —a small, highly ornamented, often jewel-like (French: bijou ) riser or stair element found within elite residential complexes or temple-pyramid summits of the Late Classic Period (c. 600–900 CE). This report synthesizes existing Maya architectural principles (e.g., talud-tablero, inset corners, stucco friezes) to propose the formal definition, possible locations, decorative grammar, and symbolic function of such a feature. It concludes that the "Bijou Step" likely served as a liminal marker, transforming a functional stair into a sacred or political threshold.
