While slapstick exists (think of the classic character Dhondu or Morya Gosavi in Maharashtrachi Hasya Jatra ), the most celebrated Marathi comedy scripts are sharp social satires. From the plays of V. V. Shirwadkar (Kusumagraj) to the modern monologues of P. L. Deshpande (Pu La), the humor always has a point—critiquing bureaucracy, family politics, or middle-class hypocrisy.
