Home Chatham | Houle Funeral

The Alexander & Houle Funeral Home , commonly known by locals as Houle Funeral Home , is a cornerstone of the Chatham community, offering compassionate and dignified end-of-life services . Located at 245 Wellington St. W. in Chatham, Ontario, this family-owned and operated establishment combines historical significance with modern facilities to support families through their most difficult times. A History of Service and Heritage The funeral home is housed in a magnificent estate property built by John McKeough in 1878, originally known as “Summerlands”. The property transitioned into a funeral home in 1925 and has since passed through several dedicated owners. Early Legacy: W.G. Burrows established the property as a funeral home, followed by Oscar Campbell and later John G. Stephen. The Alexander and Houle Era: William Alexander joined the firm in 1945, and the home eventually became known as the Alexander Funeral Home. Current Ownership: In 2002, Dan and Anne Houle purchased the historical home. Since then, they have operated the business with a deep commitment to treating every family with the same care and respect they would show their own. Modern Facilities and Professional Services Despite its historical roots, the Alexander & Houle Funeral Home is the largest and most modern facility in Chatham, designed for full accessibility. Chapel Capacity: The spacious chapel can comfortably seat 180 people for services. Reception Centre: An on-site reception area is available for post-funeral gatherings, offering various catering options to help families host guests. Personalized Care: Services are tailored to reflect the unique life and values of the deceased, including traditional funerals, memorial services, and specialized honors for veterans. Compassionate Support and Pre-Planning The Houle family and their staff prioritize long-term support for grieving individuals through a variety of resources. Grief Resources: They provide extensive guidance through Griefwords , an outreach program by Dr. Alan Wolfelt, and offer free pamphlets on topics like losing a spouse, helping children grieve, and coping during holidays. Pre-Planning: Families can ease the future burden on their loved ones by utilizing the home's pre-planning services , which allow individuals to document their final wishes in advance.
