When you delete a file, the space it occupies on your hard drive is marked as "free" or "available," but the actual data is not immediately erased. This means that, in theory, a determined individual or a data recovery tool could recover the deleted file. A free space wipe, also known as a free space overwrite or disk cleanup, overwrites the free space on your hard drive with random data, making it much more difficult or impossible to recover deleted files.
