The game changed when Apple released the Macintosh in 1984. The Mac featured a Graphical User Interface (GUI)—a screen with pictures (icons), windows, and a mouse. It was user-friendly and intuitive. Microsoft realized that if they wanted to bring computing to the masses, they needed to move beyond the black command screen.
It came bundled with utilities like Calendar, Clock, Notepad, Paint, and a primitive word processor called Windows Write.
