Pigeon - Gestation

A day or so before hatching, you might hear faint "peeping" noises coming from inside the shell. The squab inside uses a small, temporary tooth on its beak (called an ) to pip a hole in the shell.

They have a short internal egg-formation phase followed by external incubation . The entire cycle from fertilization to fledging is ~6–7 weeks, with only 17–19 days of active development inside the egg. pigeon gestation

| Stage | Location | Duration | Key events | |-------|----------|----------|-------------| | | Ovary | Instant | Releases yolk (ovum). | | Infundibulum | Oviduct start | ~15 min | Fertilization (if sperm present). | | Magnum | Oviduct mid | ~3–4 hr | Albumen (egg white) added. | | Isthmus | Oviduct | ~1 hr | Shell membranes form. | | Uterus (shell gland) | Oviduct end | ~20–24 hr | Shell added (calcium), pigment. | | Laying | Outside | Minutes | Egg laid via cloaca. |

| Day | Key development | |-----|----------------| | 1 | Blastoderm (germinal disc) develops; fertilization confirmed. | | 2 | Primitive streak; heart tube forms. | | 3 | Heart beats (~24–48h after incubation starts). | | 4 | Eye vesicles, limb buds, blood islands. | | 5 | Allantois (waste sac) forms; beak visible. | | 6 | Amniotic membrane encloses embryo. | | 7 | Feather follicles start; digits visible. | | 8 | Skeletal calcification begins. | | 9–10 | Egg tooth forms; embryo turns head to large end. | | 11–12 | Scales on legs; down feathers visible. | | 13–14 | Almost fully feathered (down); yolk sac shrinking. | | 15–16 | Yolk completely internalized; embryo fills egg. | | 17–18 | Pipping (egg tooth cracks shell); hatching (~24h process). |
