The project originated with the Wachowskis, who envisioned a modern, hyper-violent take on the ninja genre. After directing Speed Racer , they chose to produce rather than direct, hiring James McTeigue (who had served as first assistant director on The Matrix trilogy and directed V for Vendetta ). J. Michael Straczynski was brought in to rewrite the script, focusing on character depth alongside the action.
