The figure of the homemaker ( illarasi - queen of the household) occupies a sacred, idealized space in Tamil cultural consciousness. However, beneath the veneer of reverence lies a complex reality of psychological distress, economic dependency, and social erasure. This paper explores the "sad status" of housewives in Tamil Nadu by analyzing three core dimensions: economic disenfranchisement within the household, the mental health impact of unrecognized domestic labor, and the erosion of identity due to patriarchal kinship structures. Drawing on qualitative interviews and secondary data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), this paper argues that the sadness of the Tamil housewife is not merely individual but structural, rooted in a dialectic between cultural glorification and material deprivation.
