It analyzes their historical marginalization as “the other,” the archetypes available to them (the hag, the nag, the comic relief, or the wise matriarch), and the contemporary shift driven by legacy actresses and female-led production companies. Drawing on industry data, case studies (including Isabelle Huppert, Viola Davis, and Jamie Lee Curtis), and feminist film theory, this paper argues that while significant barriers persist, the rise of streaming platforms, international cinema, and demographic shifts in audience age are creating a nascent but vital renaissance for mature female talent.
