In a bold move, Governor Spotswood hired two private sloops, the Jane and the Ranger , to hunt the pirate down. In November 1718, Lieutenant Robert Maynard engaged Blackbeard at Ocracoke. After a brutal, bloody hand-to-hand fight, Maynard’s men overwhelmed the pirates. Blackbeard was killed—reportedly sustaining five gunshot wounds and twenty sword cuts before he finally fell.

The relationship between the pirates and the Virginia colonists—and specifically Virginia’s Governor, Alexander Spotswood—was contentious. Spotswood had grown tired of the pirate threat disrupting trade. While Blackbeard eventually moved his base of operations further south to Ocracoke Inlet in North Carolina, the memory of his presence in Hampton lingered. blackbeard's point
