Drive Download — ((hot)) Quota Exceeded
The error "drive download quota exceeded" means the file you’re trying to download from Google Drive has been downloaded too many times recently, and Google has temporarily restricted access to save bandwidth. Here’s a breakdown of why this happens and what you can do about it: Why it happens
File popularity – The file was shared publicly and many people downloaded it in a short time. Owner’s account limits – Free Google accounts have a daily download quota (usually around 10–20 GB for shared files). Once exceeded, the file becomes temporarily unavailable. Large file size – Fewer downloads are needed to hit the quota if the file is several GB.
What you can do now 1. Wait 24 hours (easiest) The quota usually resets automatically after a day. Try again later. 2. Make a copy to your own Drive If the file is shared and you can open it (even if download fails), try:
Open the file in Google Drive. File → Make a copy . This saves a copy to your own Drive. Then download your copy. drive download quota exceeded
Note: This works only if the file is not a folder and the owner hasn’t disabled copying. 3. Use “Add to My Drive” shortcut
Right-click the file → Add shortcut to Drive . Then move the shortcut into a folder, right-click the folder → Download . (Sometimes bypasses the quota check.)
4. Request owner to re-upload If you’re not the owner, contact the sharer and ask them to: The error "drive download quota exceeded" means the
Re-upload the file (resets the counter for them). Or use a different service (e.g., MediaFire, Mega, Dropbox, or a torrent).
5. Use a download manager (limited success) Some users report success with tools like JDownloader 2 or gdown (a Python script) by spoofing headers or using multiple sessions, but this is not reliable for quota-exceeded errors. What will NOT work
Changing your IP – The quota is tied to the file, not your IP. Using incognito mode – Same reason. Signing into a different Google account – File owner’s quota is global, not per user. Once exceeded, the file becomes temporarily unavailable
Prevent it next time (for file owners)
Share via compressed archives split into parts (reduces per-file traffic). Use Google Groups or Shared Drives (higher quotas). Host large/popular files on Cloudflare R2 , Mega , or Torrent .
